APAP | NYC 2015 opens (Jan. 9 – 13, 2015)
The annual conference of the members of the Association for Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) held each January in New York is one of the world’s largest scale performing arts networking forums and arts markets. For 2015, which marks its 58th holding, the conference convened at the main venues of the Hilton New York Midtown and the Sheraton New York Times Square and adopts a theme of “Together.” In addition to the main conference with Plenary speakers this time including the composer Stephen Schwartz, singers Rosanne Cash and Harry Belafonte and radio personality Ira Glass, the EXPO hall had booths of some 370 exhibitors.
On the APAP | NYC Special Events program this time was the New Colleagues Orientation meeting and Opening Reception, the Awards Luncheon, the Night Lounge at the Hilton and more. There were also special sessions for members and networking meetings, a Consulting Salon for one-on-one sessions over the five days of the conference.
Also on the schedule were more than 1,000 showcases by world-class artists in music, theater, dance and other genres. In addition there were dozens of sessions and pre-conference forums (Jan. 8, 9) that were free and open to the public. At the 58th APAP Awards Ceremony held on Jan. 12, the Grand Prize went to violinist Midori Goto and five other artists.
As a new feature for 2015, live streaming access was free open to the public with appearances by esteemed artists from various genres such as singer Angélique Kidjo and Tanya Tagaq, American Ballet Theater soloist Misty Copeland, poet Lemon Andersen and others (www.howlround.tv).
The Association of Performing Arts Presenters that organizes the APAP Conference is an international association of performing arts presenters from 50 U.S. states and 15 countries overseas. The organization is based in Washington D.C. and has over 5,000 members (as of Dec. 2014). Having the ACUCM founded in 1957 as its predecessor, the name was changed to APAP in 1988. The Association in funded primarily through the US National Endowment for the Arts and donations by a variety of foundations and public organizations. Every year in January, APAP organizes its annual conference in New York boasting the largest number of participants in the industry, gathering presenters and artists from around the U.S. and the world for its large arts market, grants workshops and the like, as well as other seminars, showcases, workshops, etc. The APAP Conference is known primarily as an arts market, but APAP programs are also offered in the areas of marketing management, cultural grants by two foundations and publishing of performing arts related materials.
