Ahn Ae-Soon
The contemporary dance scene in the Republic of Korea has seen exciting new developments since 2010, including the designation of the landmark Arko Arts Theater of the Daehangno theater district as a theater specializing in dance, and the establishment of the Korean National Contemporary Dance Company. Until recently, the creators active in Korean contemporary dance were graduates of a few universities with strong dance programs, but now the Korean contemporary dance world has entered a period of substantial change. A prominent leader of this Korean contemporary dance scene since the founding of the Ahn Ae-soon Dance Company in 1985 has been the internationally active dancer and choreographer Ahn Ae-Soon. After serving as the first artistic director of the Hanguk Performing Arts Center (Hanpac) and artistic director of the Seoul Performing Arts Festival (SPAF), Ahn Ae-Soon was appointed the second artistic director of the Korean National Contemporary Dance Company in July of 2013. In this interview, Ms. Ahn, who has also been an active promoter of exchange between Korean and Japanese dancer artists, speaks about the Korean National Contemporary Dance Company and the contemporary dance scene.
