Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) opens in New York (Jan. 15 – 19, 2016)
APAP is the large-scale international organization that gathers mainly US-based professionals in the performing arts industry, ranging from representatives of large entertainment facilities in Broadway and the like, universities and other educational organizations in the performing arts, artist agencies, promoters, free-lance artists and writers, once a year in New York City. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Makers” and conferences, key-note speeches and discussions are to be held on subjects including “Make Art,” “Make Decisions,” “Make a Difference” and “Make Money – Good Business Practice.”
For the opening conference titled “Making the Arts Matter,” the speakers include opera singer Carla Dirlikov, choreographer Bill T. Jones, the president of America’s largest public broadcasting organization PBS, Paula Kerger and the actor and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, among others. For this conference, choreographer Bill T. Jones has created and will perform for APAP a new 10-minute work titled “Making and Doing.”
In response to the rapid rate of digitalization in the performing arts in recent years, the second day of the conference features a program titled “Making Point of Entry,” aimed at exploring new media and broadcasting/distribution technology and methods such as new audience participation models, and to think about how they can be used to reach as large an audience as possible. Also, Roberta Levitow, the co-founder of Theatre Without Borders, and John Ewing, co-founder of the Ghana Think Tank for examining the problems of the developed nations (Europe and North America) gave a discussion about the ways to break down the hierarchy of people who are receptive to the arts.
The closing ceremony features an appearance by the Academy Award, Tony Award and Emmy Award-winning actress and dancer Rita Moreno. A rare and valuable presentation will be held about Moreno’s 60-year career in the entertainment industry and the way she continued to open up new horizons in the industry.
The APAP Conference organized by the Association of Performing Arts Presenters is one of the largest arts markets in the industry, gathering performing arts presenters and artists from around the world. The Hilton New York serves as the conference’s main venue. In addition to the general meeting for all participants and a schedule of forums, the conference has receptions and lunch meeting providing the opportunity for exchange and networking as well as approximately 400 exhibitor booths from around the world and over 1,000 showcases.
The arts market’s organizer, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP), is an association for performing arts presenters made up of arts presenters, artists and managers. Having the ACUCM founded in 1957 as its predecessor, the name was changed to APAP in 1988. The Association’s members range from the largest arts organizations to individual professionals in the industry and come from 50 U.S. states and 15 countries overseas. The Association in funded primarily through the US National Endowment for the Arts and donations by a variety of foundations and public organizations. In Japan, the arts market is the best known of APAP’s activities, but it is also active as the organizer of its annual conference in New York, of marketing management grant application services as well as seminars, meetings, grants programs, workshops, and publishing of performing arts related materials, etc. In 2009, the Association also reorganized its website to serve as a more useful information source and guide to the annual conference for first-time participants as well.
