韓日演劇交流協議会 Association of Korea-Japan Theater Exchange

In order to further develop on the ?Japan-Korea Theater People?s Conference? jointly organized by the Korean Theater Association and the Japan Directors Association for the purpose of promoting theater exchange between the two countries, the Japan-Korea Theater Communications Center (est. 2000) and the Association of Korea-Japan Theater Exchange (est. 2002) were established in Japan and the Republic of Korea respectively. The Association of Korea-Japan Theater Exchange in the ROK was established by a consortium of ROK theater organizations including the National Theater Association of Korea Inc., the Seoul Theater Association, the Seoul Theater Director?s Association, the International Association of Theater Critics-Korea, the Korea Association of Performing Arts Producers and other organizations. It engages in programs such as biennial publishing of collections of Japanese plays translated into Korean, organizing drama reading performances, symposiums, workshops and the like.

At the time of the founding of these two organizations they were mutually involved in presenting Korean plays in Japan and Japanese plays in the ROK starting with a six-year plan of three times each, but because of the very positive response of the theater world and the growth of the audience each year, the program was extended to its fifth holding in 2012, during which time the works of 25 Japanese playwrights were presented. This also led to a drama reading program becoming established in the ROK.

The playwrights and plays to be presented were selected in consultation with the Japan-Korea Theater Communications Center with candidates coming mainly from Japan?s representative playwrights but also with an active effort to include the works of young playwrights, from which the Korean theater organizations decide which works can be presented in the ROK. Of the works presented until now, plays such as Route 64 , Annindofu no Kokoro , Kuyashii Onna and Oya no Kao ga Mitai have been especially well received by Korean audiences.
