カサ・アジア Casa Asia

Casa Asia is a public consortium founded as the result of an agreement between the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Autonomous Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council. The institution, which was established in one of Spain’s most international cities, Barcelona, on 9 November 2001, reflects the objectives established in the 2000-2002 Asia-Pacific Framework Plan and the European Union’s new Asia strategies. Casa Asia’s main objective is promoting and carrying out projects and activities that contribute towards stronger relations and exchanges between Spain and Asian and Pacific countries, particularly in the cultural, academic, economic and educational spheres. And, through these activities they seek to encourage greater awareness of Spain in the Asia-Pacific region. Currently, Casa Asia is functioning to disseminate cultural information about the Asia-Pacific region in Spain and to provide venues for exchanges with the people of these two regions through the variety of activities and events it organizes.

The Casa Asia headquarters is located in Barcelona, in the Palau Baró de Quadras, a Modernist building designed by the architect Puig i Cadafalch that is classified as an Artistic and Historical Monument of National Interest. The facility includes a business center open to the business community to serve as a meeting point between Spanish and Asian companies, a library containing all types of books and periodicals published and edited in Spain concerning the Asia-Pacific region and a multimedia and computerized documentation center with printed materials, CD, DVD and video archives dedicated to gathering and supplying the latest information. There is also an auditorium, a gallery and a cafeteria.

Recent cultural and educational events and courses organized by Casa Asia relating to Japan include the following.

2005, Exchange year between the European Union and Japan opening ceremony commemorative “Hiromitsu Agatsuma Concert”
Commemorating the Exchange year between the European Union and Japan and the 2005 Aichi World Exposition, Golden Disc Award-winning Tsugaru shamisen performer Hiromitsu Agatsuma, who is currently touring Europe, gave a concert of progressive new music featuring traditional Japanese shamisen and drum with piano and vocals.

Japanese Film Showing
Two sports related comedy films from Japan, Water Boys written and directed by Shinobu Yaguchi and Ping Pong written by Taiyo Matsumoto and directed by Fumihiko Sori, were shown.

Resident artist program applications open

Akiyoshidai International Artist Village Resident Support Program
Applications are now being accepted from progressive young artists from around the world for an artist residency at the Akiyoshidai International Artist Village. The two of artists chosen by the selection committee in a stringent selection process will be invited to the Akiyoshidai International Artist Village and receive support for creating and displaying work during the period of residence. In lieu of support for creative and display efforts, a variety of activities like workshops and lectures for people of various age groups, exhibitions and exchange activities will be held. Applications can be made at Casa Asia.

In addition to these, Casa Asia also organizes conferences and lectures by noted Japanese living in Spain or Spanish living in Japan as well as introducing numerous Asia-Pacific related cultural programs and courses organized by groups other than Casa Asia in Barcelona and other areas such as Japanese courses, business Japanese courses, Ikebana courses, Shakuhachi flute and Kendo swordsmanship courses, etc.
