Pelican Onobu

Born 1975 in Hyogo Pref., Onobu is a playwright and director and leader of the Manrui Toriking Ichiza company. He founded Manrui Toriking Ichiza in 1996 while a student at Fukushima University with a core of members from the university’s Drama Research Club, and since then he has written and directed almost all of the company’s plays. In recent years his activities have expanded to writing plays for other companies. After being a victim of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and the accompanying nuclear power plant accident, Onobu moved his base of activities from Fukushima’s Minami Soma to the prefectural capital, Fukushima city in June of 2011. His quest for weighty reality in his plays has led to a style that creates compositions of fragments of detailed monologue. Representative works include Electra and An aphasic’s Note Paragraph 15 , plays in which the individual stories put forth by the main characters combine to paint an overall picture of an incident. Kiruannya to Uko-san has been performed in readings in the five cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, Sendai, Aomori and Kita Kyushu since June of 2011.
