Akiko Kitamura has long shone as a leader of Japan’s contemporary dance world since its nascent period with her dance company Leni-Basso. Her works with the group received high acclaim internationally for their solid stages fusing light and sound, and among them were works like finks that was chosen as best dance of the year 2005 in Montreal. Leni-Basso became known in Japan as the most internationally touring contemporary dance company and its activities extended to film and theater as well, but Kitamura suspended activities the group in 2009. Beginning solo activities in 2010, she went on in 2012 to bring together fruits of her ongoing research into to Indonesian culture in an international collaboration project with Indonesian artists that produced the new work To Belong – dialogue , which opened up new horizons for the artist.
