Republic of Korea’s LIG Art Hall
A hub for contemporary performance
Joh Seong-joo
LIG Art Hall established in 2006 as a base for Korean contemporary performance in the Gangnam district of Seoul known as a center of high-level youth culture as well as for its high-rise office buildings housing the headquarters of major corporations and the IT industry. The theater was opened by the LIG Insurance Co., Ltd. as part of an ongoing commitment to corporate philanthropy in the arts when the company moved into its new corporate headquarters building in Gangnam. In 2011, that commitment was evident again when the LIG Art Hall Busan was opened in South Korea’s second largest city, Busan. The Artistic Director in charge of general management and programming at LIG Art Hall is Joh Seong-joo, who turned to arts management after a career as a dancer and choreographer. We spoke with Ms. Joh about the activities of LIG Art Hall, which is known as Korea’s first theater dedicated to contemporary performing arts.
