M1 Singapore Fringe Festival

This festival has been held annually in Singapore since 2005. Its origins date back to the “Youth Explosion!” project started in 1997 by The Necessary Stage, a theater company known for its works involving social issues. After that, it developed into the “M1 Youth Connection” and “M1 Theatre Connect,” and it has been in its current form since 2005. Based on a theme chosen each year, professional artists from abroad in countries such as Japan, and working in genres ranging from theater, dance, music to visual arts, are invited to participate, and the program is selected from the applicants.
Alvin Tan, artistic director of The Necessary Stage, served as co-artistic director from 2005 to 2014, and has been the artistic director again since 2021.
