TANEC PRAHA International Festival of Contemporary Dance and Movement Theatre
This festival has been held in the Czech Republic every June since 1989. In addition to the capital Prague, some programs are also performed in regional cities such as Brno. Tanec means dance in Czech, and the organizer, Tanec Praha, became an NPO in 1991, two years after the festival was founded. And, in addition to organizing the festival, it also operates the main venue, the Divadlo Ponec Theater (currently a dance center that is a member of the European Dancehouse Network). The director has been Yvona Kreuzmannovà since the festival’s inception.
The festival is mainly for Czech artists but also invites artists from all over the world, including the countries of Europe, Africa, and Asia. The opening and closing performances feature works by choreographers active on the international dance scene, as well as international co-productions, showcases of emerging artists selected by Aerowaves, a European dance professional federation, and workshops centered around Prague for about one month. Yoshiko Chuma and Saburo Teshigawara have been invited from Japan in the past.
