“internationale tanzmesse nrw” started as “Tanzmesse NRW” in Essen in 1994, aiming for establishment of a dance platform in North Rhine-Westphalia. The current director Kajo Nelles was appointed in 2000, and it changed into a biennial international dance market. It has been held in Düsseldorf since 2002 at tanzhaus nrw and other venues. In this international market that specializes in contemporary dance, over 50 showcases are presented, nearly 100 booths are built, and participants gather from Europe, Asia and North and South America in contrast to Tanzplattform that specializes in German dance. The showcases invite public participation, but it is said that high-quality performances are presented in them because the director chooses more than half of the performances by actually visiting and seeing. Presenters gather from the world, and the event has been functioning as a place for them to exchange information.
