American Dance Festival (ADF)

American Dance Festival (ADF) has a long and proud history as one of the largest-scale dance festivals in the United States. The forerunner of ADF is the dance festival of the Bennington School of Dance founded in 1934 by the artists known as the second generation of American modern dance: Martha Graham, Hanya Holm, Doris Humphrey and Charles Weidman. Even through World War II the festival continued as a platform for nurturing dancers and choreographers and supporting the creation and performance of their works. From 1977 the theater, studios, dormitories and other facilities of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina have served as the ADF base, where every summer programs of performances, courses, workshops and the ADF Awards, etc., have been held. "Mini-ADF" satellite festivals have also been held in foreign venues such as Tokyo in 1984 and '86 and in South Korea and Russia, etc.
