The opening featured a Hamburg “Die Schutzbefohlenen” (The Wards) based on a text by Elfriede Jelinek and directed by Nicolas Stemann in a Thalia Theater, Hamburg production. It was followed by the world premier of

and at the same time a dance festival titled step X (produced in collaboration with the youth department Schnawwl of the Nationaltheater Mannheim) will be held with pieces composed for children and youth.
In addition to stage works performed at theaters, there was a project that solicited dream hotel room designs titled
Hotel shabbyshabby
and another that combined factory tours with performances titled
X Firmen
among the highlights.
From Japan, in addition to chelfitsch,
Gekidan Penino
participated with their play
Box in the Big Trunk
. During the festival there was also a “performing Arts Campus” project that gathered some 180 students from around the world, and through the cooperation of Japan’s Saison Foundation, several artists were sent to participate.

In English the festival’s name means theater of the world. It is organized jointly with the German centre of the International Theatre Institute (ITI). Since its first holding in Cologne in 1981, it has been held in a different city and with a different director each time. From 1985 to 1993 it was held in alternate years and, since 1993, once every three years. As an exception, however, in 2010 it has been held again on a biennial basis. This time, the festival was held for the first time in four years. Participating companies from Japan until now have included Shinjuku Ryozanpaku, Daisan Erotica and Ishinha, potudo-ru and faifai.
